Mold under carpet: DIY clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from mold in our villa in Al Barsha. I just pulled back the corner of the bedroom carpet near the window and found a bunch of black spots, and it feels damp underneath. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this after all the recent humidity.
Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach and a scrub brush, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold inspection company?

The dampness and black spots under the carpet are a significant red flag, especially with your children's symptoms. In Dubai's climate, this is a common issue. The high humidity, combined with condensation from air conditioning units, creates a perfect environment for mold to grow on and within building materials.
For a small, surface-level spot (less than one square foot), a DIY approach with a vinegar solution (more effective than bleach on porous surfaces) might suffice. However, your description suggests a larger, embedded problem. The moisture has likely penetrated the carpet backing and possibly the underlying concrete slab or flooring. Scrubbing the surface won't address the root cause or the mold growing out of sight. Given the health symptoms and the scale of hidden moisture, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the full extent of the water intrusion, which is crucial for a permanent fix. The mold species should also be identified, as some types common in villas here can cause more pronounced respiratory issues. Remediation then involves removing the affected materials, not just cleaning, to prevent spores from spreading. For a situation like this, the initial cost of a proper assessment can save significantly on health impacts and more extensive repairs later. |
