Mold under shower sealant: DIY or professional in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My ensuite bathroom in our Jumeirah Village Circle villa has had this musty smell for weeks, and I finally pulled back the silicone sealant around the shower and found a ton of black mold underneath. We run the exhaust fan but the humidity is just a constant battle here. I’m worried it’s spread behind the tiles. Should I just try to clean and reseal it myself, or is this a job for a professional? And if I need to hire someone, what’s a reasonable cost in Dubai for a proper mold remediation job for a single bathroom?

Black mold under silicone sealant in a Dubai bathroom is a common issue due to the high ambient humidity, and it often indicates a deeper moisture problem. If the mold is only on the surface, a thorough DIY cleaning with a hydrogen peroxide-based solution and proper resealing can be effective. However, the musty smell and location suggest it's likely spread behind the tiles.

In villas, moisture can wick up porous block walls, spreading mold invisibly within the wall cavity. Simply cleaning the surface and resealing will trap active mold inside, leading to a recurring problem and potential indoor air quality issues. A professional inspection with a borescope is needed to assess the wall cavity behind the tiles.

For a proper remediation job, expect the process to involve removal of the affected sealant and potentially some tiles to access, clean, and treat the cavity with antimicrobial solutions. They should also identify and address the root moisture source, which is often inadequate waterproofing or ventilation. The final cost is highly dependent on the extent of the damage found behind the walls, so it's essential to get an assessment first. Any reputable company should provide a detailed scope of work and may recommend post-remediation verification testing to confirm the area is dry and clear.
