Musty closet smell: DIY fix or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The walk-in closet in our bedroom in my Marina apartment has started to smell really musty, especially when I open it in the morning. We’ve lived here for two years and just noticed it over the past few weeks. I’ve tried wiping everything down and using air fresheners, but the damp, earthy smell just comes back. Is this something I can fix myself with a dehumidifier or should I call a professional to check for a hidden leak?

Good question. That musty odor you're describing is a classic sign of microbial growth, and in a Marina apartment, you're likely dealing with elevated humidity levels. Wiping things down and using air fresheners only mask the problem; they don't address the moisture source fueling it.

The UAE's climate, especially in coastal areas like Marina, creates a high ambient humidity load. Your closet, being an enclosed, likely poorly ventilated space, acts as a humidity trap. The temperature differential at night causes condensation to form on cooler surfaces (like exterior walls or even your clothes), providing the perfect damp environment for mold and mildew to proliferate. This is the "damp, earthy" smell you're detecting.

A small desiccant dehumidifier can help as a temporary measure to lower humidity in that confined space. However, it is absolutely critical to first rule out a concealed leak. In high-rise buildings, leaks can originate from adjacent units, faulty AC drain pans, or damaged plumbing chases within the walls. These are not DIY fixes.

My professional recommendation is to call for an inspection. Our certified technicians use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact source of moisture without invasive demolition. If the source is simply condensation due to poor ventilation, we can advise on solutions. If it's a leak, identifying it early is crucial to prevent structural damage, which is a violation of Dubai Municipality's health and safety standards for buildings.

Don't let it linger. For a definitive diagnosis, call us at 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com for a comprehensive assessment.
