Musty smell in wardrobe: DIY fix or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a strong musty smell coming from the back of the walk-in wardrobe, which is on an interior wall. It’s gotten worse since the weather turned more humid, and I'm worried about mold growing behind the clothes. Is this something I can tackle with a dehumidifier and cleaning, or should I call a professional company to check for a hidden leak?

Good afternoon. That's a very common issue we see in Dubai villas, especially in areas like Jumeirah with older construction and high humidity. A musty odor from an interior wall closet is a significant red flag that should not be ignored.

The key issue is that the odor is a microbial volatile organic compound (MVOC), a gaseous byproduct of active mold growth. Since it's localized to the back of the wardrobe and has intensified with humidity, it strongly suggests a hidden moisture source. This is unlikely to be simple condensation. In our climate, common culprits are a slow leak from a concealed AC condensation drain line, plumbing penetration in the slab, or interstitial condensation within the wall assembly itself due to a lack of a proper vapor barrier—a known issue in some older UAE builds.

A dehumidifier and surface cleaning will only mask the symptom temporarily. You might wipe away surface spores, but the active colony within the wall cavity will continue to grow, potentially compromising the structural integrity of the drywall and wooden studs, and posing indoor air quality health risks.

For a proper diagnosis, this requires professional assessment. Our certified inspectors use borescopes to see inside wall cavities, thermal imaging cameras to identify temperature differentials indicating moisture, and moisture meters to quantify the problem. This is crucial to find the source before any remediation can be planned.

Based on UAE health and safety guidelines for indoor environments, we always recommend professional inspection for persistent musty odors, especially when they are localized to a specific structural area. Trying to DIY this could lead to a much larger, costlier problem down the line.

I strongly advise calling a pro to get this properly diagnosed. You can reach our team for a comprehensive assessment at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or via hello@saniservice.com.
