Possible mold in villa causing illness; need inpsection and health check??« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived in our villa in Mirdif for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe. Since last month, my husband and I have both been waking up with stuffy noses and itchy eyes, which clear up after we leave for work. I’m starting to worry it’s connected. What’s the best way to get a proper mold inspection done here, and should we get a health assessment too?

Your symptoms and the visible mould growth are very likely connected. The pattern of symptoms resolving when you leave the home is a strong indicator of an indoor environmental issue. The Dubai climate, with its high humidity and constant AC use, creates perfect conditions for mould behind furniture where air doesn't circulate, like against a cold exterior wall.

For a proper inspection, do not disturb the area further. A professional inspection involves more than a visual check; it includes moisture mapping with a tramex meter to find the water source and air/surface sampling to identify the mould species. This is critical, as some types require more aggressive containment during remediation. In the UAE, look for a provider with a certified indoor environmental consultant and their own microbiology lab, as this ensures the inspection and subsequent lab analysis are aligned, providing a clear, evidence-based picture of the problem.

A health assessment from a medical doctor is advisable to address your current symptoms. An allergist can perform tests to confirm sensitivities. Share the mould inspection report with your doctor if a specific type is identified, as it can inform their assessment. Focus on resolving the environmental cause first; remediation should follow the IICRC S520 standard for mould to ensure it's done safely and effectively, preventing spores from spreading to other parts of your villa during cleanup.
