Professional mold removal needed or stronger DIY solution?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold that's been growing in the corners of our master bathroom. It's worst behind the toilet and under the sink, and it came back just a week after I wiped it down with bleach. With this humidity, I'm wondering if this is a job for a professional cleaning company or if there's a stronger product I can use myself to finally get rid of it for good?

Bathroom mold that returns quickly after bleaching indicates a deeper moisture issue, not just a surface problem. In Dubai's high humidity, this is common as bleach only removes visible growth but doesn't address the root cause or the microscopic spores embedded in porous surfaces like grout or drywall.

For a recurring problem with health symptoms present, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. DIY solutions are often temporary because the humidity source—frequently condensation from AC units or poor ventilation—isn't resolved. A professional uses moisture meters to find the water intrusion and air quality tests to identify the mold type, which is crucial when health is involved. Certain species common in damp bathrooms can cause the irritation and coughing you've observed.

For immediate action, improve ventilation by running the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after showers and ensuring your AC drain line is not clogged, as this can add humidity. Instead of bleach, which is mostly water, use a dedicated EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner. However, if the mold is behind fixtures or under the sink, the wall material itself may be compromised and require removal.

Given the persistent return and your children's symptoms, a professional assessment is the most reliable path. They can determine if the issue is confined to the bathroom or if the AC system is spreading spores elsewhere, and provide a remediation plan with verification that the problem is resolved.
