Recurring bathroom mold: DIY fix or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My ensuite bathroom in our Jumeirah apartment has had a recurring black mold problem in the grout between the wall tiles, especially after we run the AC non-stop. I've tried scrubbing it with bleach, but it just comes back darker a few weeks later. Is this something I can fix permanently myself with a better product, or is it time to call a professional cleaner to deal with it?

Recurring black mould in bathroom grout, especially in Jumeirah apartments, is almost always a symptom of excess moisture and condensation rather than a simple cleaning failure. The constant AC use creates a significant temperature differential between the cool room and the humid air from showers, causing water to condense on walls and behind tiles where it can't easily dry. Bleach only removes the surface discolouration but does not address the moisture source or the hyphae (roots) penetrating the porous grout.

For a DIY attempt, stop using bleach. Instead, use a dedicated fungicidal cleaner designed for bathrooms; look for one with specific mould-killing agents. Scrub thoroughly and, most critically, improve ventilation. Run the exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and wipe down wet tiles and glass to remove standing moisture. A small dehumidifier can also help. If the mould returns within a month despite these measures, the issue is likely deeper.

Permanent resolution often requires professional assessment. In many cases here, the mould has spread behind the tiles where you cannot see or reach it. A certified inspector can use a moisture meter to identify hidden dampness within the wall and perform air or surface sampling to identify the species, which is important for understanding any potential health risks, especially in an ensuite. Remediation then involves addressing the hidden moisture source and properly treating or replacing compromised grout and backing materials to prevent it from returning.
