Recurring black mold in closet: DIY fix or call pro?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a cluster of small black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it feels slightly damp. We tried wiping it with a bleach solution but it came back after a couple of days. Is this something I can keep treating myself, or do I need to call in a professional to find the source of the moisture?

Recurring black mold after a bleach wipe indicates an unresolved moisture source. The dampness on an exterior wall, especially in Dubai's humid climate, points to condensation from the temperature differential between your air-conditioned room and the outside heat. This creates a perpetual cycle of moisture that mold spores feed on.
Bleach is a surface-level treatment that doesn’t address the root cause and can sometimes worsen the problem by adding moisture. For a small, recurring patch like this, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The goal is not just to remove the visible mold but to locate and rectify the moisture intrusion. In villas and buildings here, this is often due to insufficient insulation in external walls (a common construction issue) or a small, hidden leak from an AC condensation line or pipe within the wall cavity. You can manage very minor surface mold with a vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution, but since it has returned, the source is active. A certified inspector will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to pinpoint the exact origin of the dampness behind the wall without unnecessary demolition. Resolving that is the only permanent fix. Once the moisture source is sealed and the area properly dried, then the mold can be remediated to prevent its return. |
