Recurring black shower grout: DIY fix or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom shower has been getting these black spots for the past couple of months, and no matter how much I scrub with bleach spray, it just comes back a week later. The room doesn't have a window and I think the exhaust fan isn't powerful enough. Is this something I can fix myself with a specific product, or do I need to call a professional cleaning company to handle it properly?

Recurring black spots on shower grout are almost always mold, thriving on the trapped moisture and soap scum in your bathroom. The Dubai climate, with its high humidity year-round, creates a perfect environment for this, especially in a windowless bathroom with inadequate ventilation.

For a persistent issue, scrubbing with bleach is a surface-level fix that often fails. Bleach can lighten the visible color but doesn't kill the root structure penetrating the porous grout, which is why it returns so quickly.

You can attempt a more targeted DIY approach. First, ensure your exhaust fan is actually moving air; hold a single square of toilet paper to it—if it doesn't hold firmly, the fan is ineffective. Run it for at least 30 minutes after every shower. For cleaning, use a dedicated EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner or a paste of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide, scrubbing with a stiff brush. Resealing the grout after a thorough cleaning is crucial to prevent moisture absorption.

If the mold returns after a proper DIY effort with improved ventilation, the growth is likely deeper. This is the point to consider a professional assessment. They can determine if moisture has penetrated behind the tiles and use industrial-grade antimicrobial treatments that are more effective than consumer products. For extensive or hidden growth, a professional with microbiology lab capabilities can identify the species and recommend the correct remediation protocol to resolve it long-term.
