Recurring black spots in shower grout: professional or DIY?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few small black spots appearing in the grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower. I’ve been wiping them away, but they keep coming back within a week, and there’s a persistent damp smell even though we use the exhaust fan. Given the humidity here, is this something I need to get a professional to handle urgently, or can I tackle it myself with a good cleaning product?

Recurring black mold in shower grout is common in Dubai due to high ambient humidity and condensation from hot showers. The persistent damp smell indicates it's not just surface level; the mold has likely penetrated the porous grout.

For small, recurring spots, a thorough DIY approach is worth trying first. Use a dedicated hydrogen peroxide-based mold cleaner or a paste of baking soda and vinegar. Scrub the grout lines with a stiff brush, then rinse thoroughly. After cleaning, ensure the area dries completely. Run the exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after showering and consider using a squeegee on walls to remove excess water. This addresses the moisture source, which is the key to prevention.

If the spots return within a week despite these efforts, or if the musty odor persists, the growth is likely deeper. At this point, a professional inspection is advised to assess if there’s a hidden moisture issue behind the tiles or in the wall cavity, which is a common problem here. Professionals use moisture meters and borescopes to check for hidden problems that DIY can't address. Remediation may involve removing and replacing the compromised grout or applying a specialized antimicrobial coating to prevent recurrence.
