Removing bathroom mold and treating child's cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the black mold growing in the corners of our master bathroom. We're in an older building in Bur Dubai and it's been spreading more since the humidity kicked in last month, even with the exhaust fan running. I'm worried it's affecting our health. What's the most effective way to get rid of it for good and should I be taking them to a doctor for these symptoms?

Bathroom mold is a common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity, and it can definitely cause the symptoms you're describing. The persistent cough in children is a frequent reaction to mold spores, which act as a respiratory irritant and can worsen allergies.
For immediate cleaning of surface mold on non-porous tiles and grout, a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach cleaner (ensure strong ventilation) can be effective. However, this only addresses the visible growth. The root cause is excess moisture. In an older Bur Dubai building, the exhaust fan may be undersized or the building's ventilation system inadequate for the climate. Simply wiping the surface will not stop it from returning. Given that the mold is black and spreading, and you're already seeing health effects, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. They can determine if the mold has penetrated behind tiles or into drywall, which requires more extensive remediation. Look for a provider that uses moisture meters and thermal imaging to find hidden dampness, not just surface cleaning. For your children's cough, a visit to a pediatrician is advisable. Inform them about the mold exposure. They can rule out other causes and provide appropriate treatment to alleviate the respiratory irritation. Long-term, controlling humidity is key. Run the exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after showers, use a dehumidifier, and immediately wipe down wet surfaces. In many older Dubai apartments, installing a more powerful fan is the most effective permanent solution to prevent recurrence. |
