Removing black mold myself or hiring a pro in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom in our Mirdif villa. It’s been there for a while, probably since the humidity spiked a few months ago, and it’s spread to a patch about the size of a large dinner plate. Is this something I can handle myself with bleach, or should I call a professional company, and if so, roughly what would that cost for a room this size?

For a patch the size of a dinner plate behind a wardrobe, the decision depends on the surface and cause. If it’s on a non-porous surface like tile or sealed wood and the moisture source is fixed, a thorough DIY clean can be effective. However, if it’s on drywall or porous wood, or if the cause is a hidden leak or condensation, professional remediation is strongly advised.

In a Mirdif villa, the high ambient humidity and constant AC use create perfect conditions for mold to regrow if the underlying moisture issue isn't resolved. Bleach is not recommended; it can worsen the problem by adding moisture and doesn't kill the roots on porous surfaces. Use a dedicated mold cleaner or a vinegar solution, ensuring you wear an N95 mask, gloves, and contain the area to prevent spore spread.

Given the children's coughing, a professional inspection is wise. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to identify the full extent of the problem and the hidden moisture source, which is critical in Dubai's climate. They also perform containment to prevent cross-contamination. A reputable company will provide a scope of work and cost after an on-site assessment; pricing is based on the area's square footage and contamination level, not just the visible patch. Always verify they hold a DHA-approved license for remediation.
