Removing mold from humid Dubai villa wall?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and with all the humidity lately, it’s gotten worse. What’s the most effective way to deal with this kind of mold in a Dubai villa, and should I call a professional company or is it something I can handle myself with bleach?

That black mold behind the wardrobe is a classic sign of condensation issues in Dubai villas, especially on exterior walls during humid periods. The wall is likely cooler than the room's dew point, causing moisture to condense and feed mold growth trapped behind the furniture.

For a small area (under one square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself. Do not use bleach; it is mostly water and can feed regrowth while its fumes are hazardous indoors. Instead, use a dedicated fungicidal cleaner or a solution of white vinegar and water. Scrub the area, let it dry completely, and address the moisture source. However, DIY cleaning only addresses visible surface mold, not the spores within the plaster or the underlying humidity problem.

Given its location on an exterior wall and rapid spread, this likely requires professional assessment. The mold growth you see is often just the tip of the iceberg. A proper inspection identifies the species (some are more problematic than others) and the exact moisture source—whether it's condensation, a pipe leak, or seepage.

Effective remediation involves containing the area, removing affected porous materials like drywall, HEPA vacuuming, and applying antimicrobial treatments. Crucially, they will identify and correct the humidity source, which is often poor ventilation or thermal bridging in the wall. For verifiable results, choose a provider that uses independent lab testing to confirm the mold type and that the environment is returned to a normal fungal ecology post-remediation.
