Safe DIY black mold removal for family home?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual, and I've just spotted patches of black mold in the corners of our master bathroom in our Jumeirah villa. It's been so humid lately that the walls never seem to fully dry out, even with the exhaust fan running. What's the safest and most effective way to get rid of this myself without exposing my family to harsh chemicals?

Black mold in bathrooms is common here due to our high humidity, which creates persistent dampness even with an exhaust fan running. For a small patch under 10 square feet, a DIY approach can be effective if done safely to minimize exposure.

Start by keeping children and anyone with respiratory sensitivities out of the area until the job is complete and the room is fully ventilated. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. The safest non-chemical solution is distilled white vinegar; it’s effective against many mold species and isn’t harsh. Spray it undiluted onto the moldy area, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush and wipe clean with disposable cloths. Never mix vinegar with bleach or other chemicals. After cleaning, use a dehumidifier or run the AC continuously for a few hours to ensure the wall dries completely.

However, if the mold returns quickly, covers a larger area, or is inside the walls or ventilation system, the moisture source is likely deeper. In these cases, or if the coughing persists, a professional inspection is advised to identify the extent and the specific mold type, as some varieties require targeted remediation approaches.
