Safe DIY black mold removal for family in humid home?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual, and I’ve just spotted patches of black mold creeping out from behind the tiles in our main bathroom. We’re in a villa in Mirdif, and it’s been so humid lately that the walls never seem to fully dry out. What’s the safest and most effective way to get rid of this myself without exposing my family to harsh chemicals?

Bathroom mold in Dubai's humidity is a common issue, as condensation from showers and year-round AC use keeps surfaces damp. For a small patch (under one square foot), a DIY approach can be effective. Start by mixing a solution of one part distilled white vinegar to one part water in a spray bottle; vinegar is a mild acid that kills many common mold types without harsh chemical fumes. Spray the area thoroughly and let it sit for an hour before scrubbing with a stiff brush.
Never use bleach, as it only removes the surface color and leaves the mold roots intact in the grout, and its fumes are particularly harmful in a poorly ventilated space with children. After scrubbing, wipe the area clean with water and dry it completely using a fan or dehumidifier. The most critical step is to address the moisture source. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and ensure it vents outside, not into the attic. Wipe down wet tiles and walls with a squeegee after use. If the mold is extensive, recurring despite cleaning, or hidden behind tiles, it indicates a deeper moisture issue. In these cases, or if anyone in the household has respiratory sensitivities, a professional inspection is recommended to assess the extent and identify the hidden moisture source, as improper handling can disperse harmful spores. |
