Safe DIY black mold removal methods for family home?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop since we got back from the summer holidays, and I’ve just discovered a patch of black mold behind their bedroom wardrobe. It’s in our villa in Al Barsha, and I’m worried the humidity while we were away caused it to spread. What is the safest and most effective way to get rid of this without exposing my family to harsh chemicals?

For a small patch (under one square meter) behind the wardrobe, a careful DIY approach is possible. Start by mixing a solution of one part distilled white vinegar to one part water in a spray bottle; vinegar is effective against many mold types and is far less harsh than bleach. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses during the entire process to avoid inhaling spores or skin contact.

Before spraying, lightly mist the moldy area with water from a separate spray bottle to dampen it—this helps prevent a large number of spores from becoming airborne during cleaning. Then, thoroughly saturate the patch with your vinegar solution and let it sit for at least an hour. Scrub the area with a stiff-bristled brush, wipe it clean with disposable cloths, and place all used cleaning materials in a sealed bag for immediate disposal.

Crucially, address the source of moisture. In Al Barsha villas, this is often condensation from an AC unit or high humidity seeping through external walls. After cleaning, use a dehumidifier or run your AC continuously on a dry setting to keep the room's humidity below 60%. Move the wardrobe slightly away from the wall to improve air circulation.

However, if the mold returns quickly, covers a larger area, or is inside your AC unit or ducts, this indicates a systemic issue. DIY cleaning then only addresses the symptom. In such cases, a professional inspection is necessary to identify the hidden moisture source and assess if spores have spread through the AC system, which is common in Dubai's climate. A proper remediation plan from a certified company will contain the area and use HEPA filtration to clean the air, which is critical for families with persistent respiratory issues.
