Safe DIY mold removal for bathroom with kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past couple of weeks, and I’ve just discovered a bunch of black spots in the grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower. It’s a windowless bathroom in our Jumeirah apartment, and the smell is really musty. What's the safest and most effective way to get rid of this mold without using harsh chemicals that could affect my family?

Black mold in a windowless bathroom is extremely common in Dubai due to the high humidity and constant condensation from hot showers meeting cold AC-cooled surfaces. For a small area on non-porous tile grout, a careful DIY approach is possible.

Start by ventilating the area. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least an hour before and after cleaning. A mixture of distilled white vinegar and water (1:1 ratio) is effective and non-toxic. Spray it directly onto the mold, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff-bristled brush. For stubborn spots, a paste of baking soda and water can be used as an abrasive scrub. Never mix vinegar with bleach or other chemicals. Wear an N95 mask and gloves during cleaning to avoid inhaling spores.

After cleaning, the underlying cause must be addressed. Wipe down wet walls after every shower and run the exhaust fan for 30-60 minutes. A small dehumidifier can help significantly in a windowless bathroom. Check that your exhaust fan is actually moving air; if a piece of toilet paper doesn't stick to the vent cover when it's on, it's not powerful enough.

Given the persistent cough and musty smell, the mold may be more extensive behind tiles or under flooring. Surface cleaning won't fix that. If the mold returns quickly after cleaning or covers more than a square foot, a professional inspection with moisture meters and borescopes is needed to assess hidden damage. For health concerns with children, a lab analysis of a tape lift sample can identify the mold species and inform the appropriate remediation strategy.
