Safe DIY mold removal for family with kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I've just spotted black patches of mold growing in the corner where the shower meets the ceiling. We're in a villa in Al Barsha and it's been so humid lately that the bathroom never seems to dry out completely. What's the safest way to get rid of this myself without exposing my family to harsh chemicals?

Bathroom mold in Dubai's humidity is very common, especially in corners with poor ventilation. For a small patch you've just spotted, a safe DIY approach is possible.
First, ensure the area is well-ventilated; open a window and run the bathroom exhaust fan during and after the process. A simple and effective non-chemical solution is distilled white vinegar. Pour it into a spray bottle, apply generously to the moldy area, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush and rinse with hot water. For persistent spots, a paste of baking soda and water can be used for scrubbing. Always wear an N95 mask and gloves to avoid inhaling spores or getting them on your skin. The key to preventing recurrence is managing moisture. After showers, use a squeegee on walls and doors. Ensure your exhaust fan is working properly and run it for at least 30 minutes after bathing. Wiping down wet surfaces and fixing any leaky fixtures is crucial. In a villa, check that your external bathroom vents aren't blocked. If the mold covers an area larger than one square meter, has a persistent musty odor, or returns quickly after cleaning, the moisture issue may be deeper within the wall or ceiling. In these cases, and especially with children showing respiratory symptoms, a professional inspection is advised to identify the source and extent of the problem, as improper handling can spread spores throughout the home. |
