Safe DIY removal for mold behind kids' wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past two weeks and I just found patches of black and green mold behind their bedroom wardrobe, which is on an exterior wall in our villa in Jumeirah. I think it might have started from the last heavy dew we had a while back. What is the safest and most effective way to get rid of this without exposing my family to harsh chemicals?

For a small patch (under one square meter) and with the cause identified as condensation, DIY removal is possible with proper precautions. First, fix the moisture source - wipe down the wall and improve air circulation behind the wardrobe. In Dubai's climate, placing furniture against exterior walls often leads to condensation from the temperature difference between the AC-cooled room and the humid outside air.

Wear an N95 mask, goggles, and rubber gloves. Isolate the area by closing the door and covering the floor with plastic sheeting. Gently mist the mold with water to suppress spores, then scrub the area with a solution of white vinegar or a diluted detergent. Avoid bleach; it only removes the colour and can release harmful fumes in an enclosed space, especially when mixed with other cleaners.

After cleaning, the wall must be thoroughly dried. Use a fan or dehumidifier to prevent immediate regrowth. Discard any porous materials like the backing of the wardrobe if contaminated.

However, if the mold covers a larger area, has a musty odour, or returns after cleaning, the issue is likely systemic. In villas, mold on exterior walls can indicate deeper penetration or insulation problems. For a child's room and persistent health symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly advised to assess the full extent and identify any hidden moisture. They can perform a lab analysis to confirm the mold type, which is crucial for determining the appropriate remediation strategy, especially with green and black patches present.
