Safe DIY removal of black mold in bathroom?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual, and I just noticed a patch of black mold growing in the corner of our master bathroom where the shower is. We're in a villa in Al Barsha, and it's been so humid lately that the walls never seem to fully dry out. What's the safest way to get rid of this myself without exposing my family to harsh chemicals?

For a small patch (under one square foot), DIY removal can be safe and effective. The priority is containing the spores and addressing the moisture source, which is critical in Dubai's humidity.

First, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Isolate the area by closing the bathroom door and covering the floor with plastic if possible. Never use bleach, as it only removes the surface colour and leaves the moisture-loving roots intact. Instead, use a dedicated mould-cleaning solution, undiluted white vinegar, or a baking soda paste. Scrub the area thoroughly, then dry it completely with a fan.

The underlying issue is ventilation. After every shower, run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes and wipe down wet surfaces. Check that your fan is actually moving air; if a tissue doesn't stick to the vent cover, it may be underpowered. A dehumidifier can help significantly in a villa bathroom that never fully dries.

If the mould covers a larger area, returns after thorough cleaning, or if the coughing persists, DIY methods are not advised. Disturbing larger colonies aerosolizes spores. In these cases, a professional inspection can identify the species and the full extent of the issue, which is often hidden behind walls or under tiles in our climate.
