Safe, fast mold removal with toddler at home?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual, and I've just spotted black patches of mold growing behind the toilet in our master bathroom. It's been incredibly humid in our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle for the last few weeks, and the bathroom window just doesn't seem to cut it for ventilation. What's the safest and fastest way to get rid of this mold, considering I have a toddler who crawls around and touches everything?

For a small patch behind the toilet, you can handle this safely yourself. First, keep the toddler out of the bathroom during and after cleaning until everything is completely dry. Open the window and run the bathroom exhaust fan if you have one.

Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water in a spray bottle; it's effective against many common bathroom molds and is less harsh than bleach. Spray the area thoroughly, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush. Wear an N95 mask and gloves to avoid inhaling or touching spores. Dry the area completely with a fan or dehumidifier afterward—moisture is what allows it to return.

In JVC's humidity, this is often a ventilation issue. Run the AC consistently to lower indoor humidity levels, and after showers, ensure the bathroom is ventilated for at least 30 minutes. If the mold is widespread, covers more than a square meter, or returns quickly after cleaning, the moisture source may be deeper. In those cases, a professional inspection can identify hidden condensation or leaks. For a toddler's safety, it's wise to have a lab test the mold type if the coughing persists, as some species are more allergenic than others.
