Safe way to remove black bathroom mold with kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual, and I just found black speckles growing along the grout in our master bathroom shower. We’re in an older building in Bur Dubai and I feel like the ventilation just isn't strong enough after our long showers. What’s the most effective and kid-safe way to get rid of this for good?

Black bathroom mold in Dubai is often linked to the high humidity from showers and poor ventilation, especially in older buildings. For the black speckles on grout, a simple and safe first step is to apply distilled white vinegar. Spray it directly on the mold, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush. This is generally safer for kids than harsh chemical sprays, which can leave irritating fumes.
However, this only removes the visible growth. The underlying cause is almost certainly excess moisture. In Bur Dubai's climate, bathrooms need constant ventilation. Run the exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and keep the bathroom door open to allow humidity to disperse. Wiping down wet surfaces immediately also helps. If the exhaust fan is weak, consider upgrading it—this is a common necessity in older apartments. If the mold returns quickly, spreads to drywall, or the coughing persists, the issue may be more serious. Surface cleaning won't fix mold growing behind tiles or in the wall cavity from a slow leak. In these cases, a professional inspection is advised to identify the moisture source and the mold species. Some types, like Stachybotrys, require more careful handling, especially with children present. A proper assessment involves moisture meters and, if needed, lab analysis of a tape-lift sample to determine the specific health risk and appropriate remediation method. |
