Safe way to remove black mold from child's bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

Our family villa in Jumeirah has had a persistent damp smell in the upstairs bedrooms since the humidity really kicked in a few weeks ago. I just pulled my daughter's bed away from the wall and found a patch of black mold spreading behind it, and she's been sneezing a lot lately. What's the most effective and safe way to get rid of this without putting my kids at risk from harsh chemicals?

For a small patch (under 1 square meter), you can clean it yourself safely. Start by mixing a solution of 1 part white vinegar to 1 part water in a spray bottle. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Open the windows for ventilation, spray the area thoroughly, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush and wipe clean with a damp cloth. Dispose of all cleaning materials.

Do not use bleach, as it only removes the surface colour and can release harmful fumes in an enclosed space, especially with the AC recirculating air. Vinegar is effective at killing many common mould types and is far safer for children.

Given the Dubai climate, the root cause is almost certainly condensation from AC airflow hitting a cold exterior wall or a minor leak. Simply cleaning the mould will not stop it from returning. After cleaning, use a dehumidifier in the room and ensure the AC is set to a consistent temperature to minimize condensation.

However, since you mention a persistent damp smell and your child is showing symptoms, the visible patch is likely just the tip of the iceberg. Mould spreads behind walls and under flooring. For a situation like this in a child's bedroom, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to identify the full extent of the growth and the moisture source. Remediation companies with their own microbiology lab can identify the specific mould type to better assess any health risks and verify the cleanup was successful through post-remediation testing.
