Safe way to remove black mold with toddlers?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's because of the black mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom in Jumeirah. It's been so humid lately and I think it's been growing there for a while, but we only noticed it when we moved the furniture to rearrange the room. What is the safest and most effective way to remove it, considering I have a toddler and a baby who are always in our room?

Black mold exposure can cause respiratory irritation, especially in children. For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself with precautions. Isolate the area from your children and pets. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Scrub the affected surface with a mixture of detergent and water, then thoroughly dry it. Avoid using bleach, as it doesn't prevent regrowth and can release harmful fumes.

However, finding mold behind furniture often indicates a larger hidden problem, like a condensation leak from an AC unit or moisture seeping from the wall. In Dubai's high humidity, mold can regrow quickly if the source isn't found and fixed.

With toddlers and a baby present, the safest approach is a professional assessment. They will identify the moisture source, contain the area to prevent spores from spreading, and use HEPA filtration during removal. For health safety, Dubai Municipality guidelines recommend certified remediation for any persistent or large-scale mold growth. A proper inspection will determine the full extent and the most effective way to resolve it permanently.
