Safe way to remove mold without chemical health risks?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing at night and I’m worried it’s because of the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived in our Jumeirah villa for two years and never had an issue, but it must have been growing there for a while, hidden from view. What is the safest and most effective way to get rid of this mold without putting my family’s health at risk from the chemicals?

Black spots behind furniture are a common issue in Dubai villas, often from condensation where the cold wall meets humid air. For a small area (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself safely.

Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix one part white vinegar with one part water in a spray bottle—vinegar is a natural antimicrobial. Spray the area thoroughly and let it sit for an hour. Scrub with a stiff brush, then wipe clean with a damp cloth and dry the area completely with a fan. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the colour and can release harmful fumes, especially in a poorly ventilated space.

The key is not just removal but preventing its return. Mold grows due to moisture. This spot likely formed because the wardrobe was trapping humid air against a cold external wall, a frequent problem with year-round AC use. After cleaning, move the furniture a few inches away from the wall to improve air circulation. A dehumidifier in the room can also help maintain a dry environment.

However, given the hidden nature of the growth and your children's symptoms, the mold you see might be part of a larger issue inside the wall. For health safety and to address the root cause, a professional inspection is advised. They can use moisture meters and borescopes to check for concealed dampness and recommend targeted remediation, which is often more effective and safer than a broad application of chemicals.
