Safe ways to remove black mold from bedroom wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing a lot at night and we just found black spots on the back of the wardrobe in our master bedroom. It’s been really humid for the last couple of months in our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle, and I’m worried this is the cause. What’s the safest and most effective way to get rid of it without exposing my family to harsh chemicals?

Black spots behind a wardrobe in JVC are a classic sign of condensation mould, a common issue in Dubai's humid climate exacerbated by year-round AC use. The safest removal method depends on the extent. For a small, isolated patch (under 1 square foot), you can handle it yourself with care.

First, contain the area. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses to avoid inhaling spores or skin contact. Isolate the wardrobe from the rest of the room if possible. For non-porous surfaces like the back of a laminate wardrobe, a solution of white vinegar and water (1:1 ratio) is effective and non-toxic. Spray, let it sit for an hour, then scrub and wipe clean. For porous surfaces like drywall, baking soda paste can help.

However, with children experiencing nighttime coughing, this suggests a potential airborne spore issue that cleaning the visible spot won't fully address. The humidity has likely created a problem beyond what you can see. In such cases, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to identify the moisture source and assess the full extent. They can perform targeted, science-driven remediation that focuses on containment and air filtration to prevent cross-contamination, using methods that are effective yet avoid harsh biocides, which can be more irritating than the mould itself. The goal is to solve the root cause, not just the symptom.
