Safely remove bathroom black mold myself or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I finally checked behind the toilet in our master bathroom. I found a patch of black mold spreading on the wall that seems to have been there a while, hidden by the cabinet. What’s the safest way to get rid of this myself without exposing my family to more spores, or should I just call a professional company immediately?

Based on your description, this is a situation that warrants extreme caution. The presence of black mold (likely Stachybotrys chartarum), coupled with your children's respiratory symptoms, indicates a potential health risk that should not be taken lightly.

The humid climate in Dubai, exacerbated by constant AC use creating temperature differentials and condensation, provides the perfect environment for mold to thrive in hidden areas like behind toilets. A small visible patch often signifies a larger colony within the wall cavity.

For a DIY approach to be considered, the affected area must be very small (less than 1 square foot/0.1 square meter), and you must have no health concerns. You would need to isolate the area with plastic sheeting, wear an N95 respirator, goggles, and gloves, and clean with a dedicated antimicrobial agent, not bleach. However, given that the mold is already on a porous surface (drywall) and has been there for a while, complete removal via DIY is nearly impossible without risking cross-contamination and significant spore release during disturbance.

Considering the health symptoms and the hidden nature of the growth, I strongly recommend against a DIY attempt. The safest and most effective course of action is to call a professional remediation company immediately. We are regulated by DM and Dubai Municipality guidelines which require proper containment, negative air pressure, and HEPA filtration to safely remove the mold and the contaminated porous materials, such as the drywall, to prevent further exposure and recurrence.
