Safely remove bathroom mold with family at home?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I suspect it’s because of the black spots I just found growing along the ceiling in our master bathroom. We’ve been using the AC constantly to combat the humidity, but it's in a windowless bathroom in our Jumeirah Park villa so the air just feels damp all the time. What’s the safest and most effective way to get rid of this mold with my family still living at home?

Bathroom mold in Dubai's climate is extremely common due to high humidity and condensation from constant AC use, especially in windowless spaces. The black spots are likely Stachybotrys or Cladosporium, which can irritate airways and worsen coughing, particularly in children.
For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub with a mixture of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning solution, not bleach, as bleach only removes the surface color and doesn't kill the roots. Ensure the room is well-ventilated by running the bathroom extractor fan for at least an hour after cleaning and keeping the door open. Given the recurring dampness and your family's symptoms, surface cleaning may not be enough. The underlying issue is excess moisture. A professional assessment is the safest approach with everyone at home. They use containment barriers and HEPA air scrubbers to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of the house during remediation. They can also identify the moisture source—often inadequate ventilation, a faulty extractor fan, or condensation from cold AC ducts—and advise on a permanent fix, like installing a more powerful fan or a dehumidifier. For health safety, a post-remediation verification test from an independent lab is the only way to confirm the air quality is safe. |
