Safely remove bathroom mold with kids in home?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual, and I’ve just spotted some black and green fuzzy patches in the corner where the shower meets the ceiling in our Marina apartment. It’s been incredibly humid the last few weeks and I think the bathroom's ventilation isn't strong enough to handle it. What’s the safest and most effective way to get rid of this mold, considering I have young children who use that bath every day?

For a small patch in a Marina bathroom, you can handle it yourself with proper precautions. The key is addressing the moisture source—in Dubai's humidity, bathroom ventilation is critical. Run the exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and wipe down wet surfaces to reduce condensation.

Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Isolate the area from children and pets. For cleaning, a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) applied directly to the mold is often effective. Never mix chemicals. Scrub the area, let the solution sit for 10-15 minutes, then rinse and dry thoroughly.

Given the location on the ceiling and your children's coughing, this could be more serious. Mold on porous surfaces like drywall or ceiling tiles often means it has penetrated deeper, where surface cleaning won't reach. The green and black coloration also suggests multiple species may be present, some of which can aggravate respiratory issues.

With young children consistently exposed, a professional inspection is the safest course. They can determine if the mold is superficial or has spread into the wall cavity, which is common here due to the constant AC use creating temperature differentials and hidden condensation. A proper assessment includes moisture mapping and, if needed, lab analysis to identify the specific spores present, which informs the correct remediation method to ensure it doesn't quickly return.
