Safely remove black mold behind kids' dresser?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks, and I’m starting to panic because I just found patches of black mold behind their bedroom dresser, which is on an interior wall. We live in a villa in Al Barsha and I’m worried the recent humidity made it worse. What’s the safest way to get rid of this myself without exposing my family to more spores?

Black mold behind furniture on interior walls is common in Dubai villas, especially during humid periods. The wall likely stays cooler than the room's air, causing condensation and creating a perfect environment for mold. Your priority is to remove it without spreading spores.

First, isolate the area. Keep the kids and anyone with respiratory issues out of the room. Close the door and place a wet towel at the base to contain the space. Turn off the AC unit serving that room to prevent spores from circulating through the ducts. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses.

Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water in a spray bottle—avoid bleach as it only removes the color and can release harsh fumes. Lightly mist the moldy patch to dampen it and prevent spores from becoming airborne. Gently scrub the area with a disposable cloth or brush, then wipe it clean with a damp cloth. Allow the wall to dry completely. A fan pointed at the wall can help, but ensure it's not blowing spores into the room.

After cleaning, address the source. Move the dresser away from the wall to improve air circulation. Wipe down the wall regularly to check for returning condensation, which indicates a persistent humidity issue. A dehumidifier in the room can help maintain a drier environment.

Given the location on an interior wall and the health symptoms, the mold behind the dresser may be a visible part of a larger issue within the wall cavity. Persistent coughing in children linked to a discovered mold patch warrants a professional inspection. They can use moisture meters and borescopes to check inside the wall for hidden growth and provide a lab analysis to identify the mold species, which is critical for understanding health risks and ensuring it is properly remediated.
