Safely remove black mold behind wardrobe without spreading spores?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from the humidity. What’s the best way to get rid of this safely without it spreading spores everywhere?

Black mold behind furniture is common in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. For a small area (less than one square meter), you can handle it yourself safely, but containment is critical to prevent spreading spores.

First, isolate the area. Close the room's AC vents and doors, and seal the gap under the door with a towel. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Lightly mist the moldy area with water from a spray bottle; this weighs down the spores so they don't become airborne during cleaning. Carefully move the wardrobe away from the wall to access the spot.

Use a damp cloth with a solution of diluted detergent or white vinegar to wipe the mold away. Avoid abrasive scrubbing that can damage the wall and release particles. Place all used cleaning cloths directly into a sealed plastic bag for disposal. After cleaning, use a separate damp cloth to wipe down the surrounding wall and the back of the wardrobe to capture any stray spores. Allow the area to dry completely with good ventilation.

However, if the mold covers a larger area, has a strong musty odor, or is on porous materials like drywall that are visibly damaged, professional assessment is strongly recommended. Recurring mold in the same spot often indicates a hidden moisture source, like a condensation leak from an AC pipe inside the wall, which requires repair to prevent it from returning. In such cases, a certified inspector can identify the species and moisture source, and a remediation team will use containment barriers and HEPA filtration to remove it safely. For health concerns, especially with children coughing, a lab test can identify the mold type and provide clarity on potential irritants.
