Safely remove black mold from bedroom without harsh chemicals?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa. It must have been growing there since the humidity spiked a couple of months ago, but we only spotted it when we moved the furniture to rearrange the room. What is the safest and most effective way to get rid of it without exposing my family to more spores or harsh chemicals?

First, limit exposure immediately. Keep the bedroom door closed and the AC running to contain spores. Do not attempt to dry scrub or vacuum the area, as this will aerosolize the spores.

For a small, contained patch (under 1 square meter), a solution of white vinegar or 3% hydrogen peroxide can be effective. Apply with a spray bottle, let it sit for an hour to penetrate the mold, then wipe with a damp cloth you can dispose of. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection during this process. The Dubai climate, with its high humidity and constant AC use, creates perfect conditions for this regrowth, so the source of the moisture must be addressed. Check for a condensation leak from an AC duct in the ceiling or wall, or moisture wicking from the external villa wall.

Given the location behind furniture and the fact you have children with respiratory symptoms, professional assessment is strongly advised. The coughing could be from the mold or from other irritants it has stirred up. In the UAE, remediation companies should follow IICRC S520 standards for mold removal. A proper protocol involves sealing the area with negative air pressure, HEPA-filtered air scrubbers, and safe removal of contaminated materials. They should also perform post-remediation verification testing to confirm spore counts have returned to normal indoor levels. This is the only way to ensure the mold is fully addressed and your family is not exposed to further spores during the cleanup process.
