Safely remove black mold from humid bathroom myself?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual, and I’ve just spotted patches of black mold in the corners of our master bathroom in our Jumeirah Park villa. It’s been so humid since the weather changed a few weeks ago, and the ventilation in there isn't great. What’s the safest and most effective way to get rid of it myself without risking my family's health?

Black mold in humid bathrooms is common in Dubai's climate, especially with poor ventilation. For small patches under one square meter, you can clean it yourself safely. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection to avoid inhaling spores or skin contact.
Use a dedicated mold cleaner, a diluted vinegar solution, or a mix of one part bleach to ten parts water. Scrub the area thoroughly, but never mix cleaning products. Ensure the room is well-ventilated by opening a window and running an exhaust fan if you have one. After cleaning, the area must be completely dried to prevent immediate regrowth. A dehumidifier or fan left running for several hours is essential. However, if the mold covers a larger area, is inside the walls or ceiling, or returns quickly after cleaning, professional assessment is needed. This indicates a hidden moisture source. Persistent coughing in children can be linked to mold exposure, and improper DIY removal can aerosolize spores, making the problem worse. In such cases, a certified inspector can identify the species and moisture source, which is critical for a permanent solution. |
