Safely remove black mold from kid's bathroom without window?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our kids' bathroom where the shower is. I'm really worried because my youngest has been having allergy-like symptoms, sneezing a lot more than usual. The room doesn't have a window and the exhaust fan seems pretty weak. What's the safest and most effective way to clean this up myself without risking my family's health?

Bathroom mold is common in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation from showers, especially in windowless rooms with poor ventilation. The black patch is likely Stachybotrys or Cladosporium, which can aggravate allergies and respiratory issues, particularly in children.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it safely. First, ensure your child is not in the room during the process. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water or a diluted bleach solution (1 cup bleach to 1 gallon of water) in a spray bottle. Never mix vinegar and bleach. Spray the area thoroughly, let it sit for 15 minutes, then scrub with a stiff brush. Dry the area completely with a fan or dehumidifier afterward; this is critical as mold thrives on moisture.

The weak exhaust fan is a core issue. It should run during and for at least 20 minutes after each shower. Consider upgrading to a higher-capacity model to manage the humidity effectively.

Given your child's symptoms and the persistent moisture conditions, a professional inspection is prudent. DIY cleaning removes visible mold but not necessarily the hidden spores within porous grout or behind tiles. A certified inspector can use moisture meters to find hidden dampness and take air or swab samples for lab analysis to identify the exact species and its concentration, which clarifies the health risk. This is the only way to be certain the environment is safe for a child with allergy symptoms.
