Safely remove black mold from kids' bedroom window?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that's started to appear along the edges of their bedroom window frames in our villa in Jumeirah. It's been getting worse since the humidity spiked a few weeks ago. What's the safest and most effective way to get rid of it myself without putting my family at risk?

Window frame mold in Dubai villas is common due to high humidity and condensation from AC use. For a small, surface-level patch, you can clean it safely yourself. First, ensure your kids are not in the room during the process and that it is well-ventilated.
Wear an N95 mask, goggles, and gloves. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water or a diluted bleach solution (1 cup bleach to 1 gallon of water) – though vinegar is often preferred for its lower fumes. Do not mix cleaners. Scrub the area with a stiff brush, then wipe it down with a damp cloth and dry the frame thoroughly immediately after. The real challenge is controlling the moisture. This mold grows because of condensation. After cleaning, use a dehumidifier in the room or a moisture absorber near the window. Wipe down window frames each morning to remove any overnight condensation. Ensure your AC is serviced and draining properly, as high indoor humidity from a faulty unit is a frequent cause. However, if the mold has penetrated the wood or drywall, or if it covers an area larger than a square meter, DIY cleaning may not be sufficient and could aerosolize spores. Given that your children are already symptomatic, the safest approach is a professional inspection. They can identify the moisture source and the mold species. In the UAE, remediation companies should provide a detailed lab report from a certified microbiology lab to verify the type and count of spores, which is critical for health concerns. This is the only way to be certain the environment is safe for your family. |
