Safely remove black mold in my kids' bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I just found a patch of black mold behind the wardrobe in their bedroom. We’re in an older building in Jumeirah and I’m worried the recent humidity made it worse. What’s the safest and most effective way to get this removed, especially since it’s in the room where they sleep?

Black mold in a child's bedroom requires a cautious approach. The first step is to identify the moisture source—in Dubai's climate, this is often condensation from AC units, leaks from aging plumbing, or humidity seeping through walls in older buildings like those in Jumeirah. The recent high humidity can absolutely accelerate its growth.
For a small patch (less than one square meter), you can clean it yourself with a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. Ensure the room is well-ventilated and keep children away during the process. However, given its location behind furniture, the visible patch is likely just part of a larger problem. Mold grows behind baseboards, inside walls, and under flooring. For a child's room, a professional inspection is strongly advised to assess the full extent and identify the precise species. Remediation involves more than just wiping the surface; it requires containing the area with negative air pressure to prevent spores from spreading, physically removing contaminated porous materials like drywall or insulation, and using HEPA filtration to clean the air. The goal is to fix the moisture problem and remove the mold, not just disinfect it. Companies with their own microbiology labs can provide post-remediation verification testing to confirm the space is safe, which is the most critical step for peace of mind. |
