Safely remove black mold near kids' bedroom myself?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and I just found a patch of black, fuzzy mold behind their bedroom wardrobe. We’re in a villa in Jumeirah and I think it might have started after that really humid spell we had last month. What’s the safest way to get rid of this myself without putting my family at risk?

Black mold growth behind furniture is common in Dubai villas after humid periods, as stagnant air and condensation create ideal conditions. For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can handle it yourself with strict safety precautions.

First, isolate the area. Keep children and anyone with asthma or allergies away from the room entirely. Open windows for maximum ventilation and wear an N95 mask, gloves, and protective eyewear. Mix a solution of one part household bleach to four parts water. Apply it to the moldy surface, let it sit for 15 minutes, then scrub with a stiff brush. Avoid simply wiping, as this can release more spores. Afterwards, wipe the area clean with a damp cloth and dispose of all cleaning materials in a sealed bag.

Crucially, address the source. Move the wardrobe away from the wall to improve air circulation. The mold grew due to humidity; a dehumidifier or ensuring your AC runs consistently to control moisture will prevent it from returning. Since this is in your children's bedroom and they are experiencing respiratory symptoms, the safest approach is to have the mold professionally identified. A lab culture can confirm the species, as "black mold" is often used for various types, and their ongoing cough warrants knowing exactly what they were exposed to. For peace of mind, a professional inspection can also check for hidden growth inside walls or under flooring that you cannot see.
