Safely remove black mold with kids in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the black mold that’s started growing in the corners of our master bathroom in Jumeirah Park. It’s gotten worse since the humidity kicked in a few weeks ago, and I’m really worried about their health. What’s the safest and most effective way to get rid of it without exposing my family to harsh chemicals?

Black mold in bathrooms is common here due to Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use, which creates condensation. For your children's cough, it's wise to treat this seriously as mold spores can irritate airways.

For a small patch under 1 square foot, you can clean it yourself safely. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Use a mixture of white vinegar or a diluted baking soda paste—these are effective and less harsh than chemicals. Scrub the area thoroughly, let it sit, then wipe clean. Ensure the bathroom is well-ventilated during and after. Do not mix cleaning products, especially bleach with vinegar, as it creates toxic gas.

However, if the mold is in the corners and has been growing, it may have spread behind tiles or into grout. Scrubbing surface mold often doesn't address the root moisture problem or hidden growth. Since you've noticed it's worsened with humidity and your kids are symptomatic, a professional inspection is recommended. They use moisture meters and borescopes to check inside walls and can identify if the AC system is spreading spores.

The safest approach is to identify the source of the moisture—often a leaky pipe, poor sealant, or insufficient ventilation. After any removal, run an exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after showers and wipe down wet surfaces to keep the area dry. For health concerns, always consult a physician.
