Safely remove mold frm clothes with kids around?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks, and I’m starting to panic. I just pulled out some winter clothes from the back of the wardrobe in our master bedroom and found a bunch of them covered in black, fuzzy spots. We live in a villa in Jumeirah and I’m worried the humidity has gotten into everything. What’s the safest way to clean this and make sure the mold doesn’t come back, especially with the kids around?

Mold on clothing is a common issue in Dubai's climate, where high humidity can easily become trapped in enclosed spaces like wardrobes. The safest method with children present is to handle the items outdoors or in a very well-ventilated area to prevent spreading spores indoors.

For washable fabrics, a hot wash cycle (at least 60°C) with a detergent is the most effective method. Adding white vinegar or a specialized mold-killing laundry additive can help. Sun-drying the items afterwards is highly recommended, as UV rays are a natural disinfectant. For dry-clean-only items, inform the cleaner about the mold so they can use appropriate treatments.

To prevent recurrence, address the source of humidity. Ensure your AC is running efficiently, as it is your primary tool for controlling indoor humidity. Using a dehumidifier or moisture-absorbing products like silica gel packs in wardrobes is essential. Since you found this in a villa and your children are experiencing respiratory symptoms, the mold in the wardrobe may be part of a larger issue. Persistent coughing can be a reaction to airborne spores. A professional inspection can identify if there is a hidden moisture source or a wider contamination problem that needs to be addressed to protect your family's health.
