Safely remove mold from kids' room without chemicals?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks, and I just found a patch of black, fuzzy mold behind their bedroom wardrobe. We live in a villa in Jumeirah, and I think it might be from the humidity after we run the AC all day. What’s the safest way to get rid of it without exposing my family to harsh chemicals?

First, address the moisture source. In Dubai's climate, mold behind furniture is often from condensation where cold AC walls meet humid air. Move the wardrobe away from the wall to let the area dry completely; a dehumidifier or fan can help accelerate this.

For the visible patch, a solution of white vinegar and water (1:1 ratio) is effective and non-toxic. Apply it with a spray bottle, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a microfiber cloth. Wear an N95 mask and gloves during cleaning to avoid inhaling spores. Never use bleach, as it only removes the colour and can release harmful fumes into a child's room.

After cleaning, monitor the area for several days to ensure it does not return. To prevent recurrence, ensure the room's AC unit is serviced and draining properly, as a clogged drain line is a common cause of humidity. Maintain consistent AC temperatures to reduce drastic temperature swings that cause condensation.

Given the persistent coughing in children, this situation warrants a professional inspection. The black colour alone doesn't identify the species; some types like Aspergillus are common here and can cause such respiratory irritation. A proper inspection includes moisture mapping to find hidden dampness and air or swab sampling sent to a microbiology lab for identification. This determines if the mold is an allergen or a more concerning type, which guides the necessary remediation steps. For a child's room, this verification is the safest course of action.
