Safely remove shower mold with kids around?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I’ve just spotted black speckles growing in the grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower. It’s the bathroom we all use, and with the humidity lately, it seems to be getting worse. What’s the safest and most effective way to get rid of this for good, especially with little ones around?

Black speckles in shower grout are common in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation from air conditioning creating ideal conditions for mold. For surface mold on non-porous tiles, a thorough cleaning is often sufficient. Wear gloves and a mask. Scrub the area with a paste of baking soda and water or a diluted vinegar solution (1 part vinegar to 1 part water). Avoid mixing chemicals, especially bleach with ammonia or vinegar, as this creates toxic fumes.

The most critical step is controlling moisture. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and wipe down wet surfaces with a squeegee. Ensure your AC is set to a temperature that minimizes condensation. For persistent mold growing deep within porous grout, cleaning only removes the surface discoloration; the fungal roots often remain.

If the mold returns quickly after cleaning, appears in large patches, or if your children's coughing persists, a professional inspection is recommended. They can identify the specific mold type and the extent of the problem, which is crucial for determining the correct remediation strategy, especially with children present. In many villas, hidden moisture behind tiles is the real issue. A company with its own microbiology lab can provide the concrete data needed to solve the problem for good.
