Safely removing bathroom mold with kids in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing a lot more lately, and I'm starting to worry it's because of the black spots I've found growing in the corners of our main bathroom. We're in a villa in Jumeirah and with the humidity this past month, it seems to have gotten a lot worse. What's the safest and most effective way to get rid of bathroom mold here when you have young children around?

Bathroom mold in Dubai's humid climate is a common trigger for respiratory issues like coughing, especially in children. The black spots are likely Cladosporium or Aspergillus, which thrive on the condensation from showers and year-round AC use creating temperature differentials.

For small patches, a solution of white vinegar or diluted bleach (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) can be effective. Always wear gloves and a mask, ensure the room is well-ventilated, and keep children away until the area is completely dry and fumes have dissipated. However, this only addresses surface growth you can see.

With children experiencing symptoms, a surface clean may not be sufficient. Mold roots (hyphae) can penetrate porous grout and hide behind silicone sealant. The safest approach is a professional assessment to determine the extent. They can identify the species and, more importantly, the moisture source—often a leaking pipe, faulty tank insulation, or inadequate ventilation—that must be fixed to prevent recurrence. Remediation for occupied homes with sensitive occupants involves containment procedures and HEPA vacuuming to prevent spreading spores during cleaning.

For long-term control, run the bathroom exhaust fan for 30 minutes after showers and consider a standalone dehumidifier. Regularly inspect and reseal grout lines, as this is the first line of defense against moisture intrusion.
