Safely removing black mold near coughing kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I’m starting to worry. I just pulled back the silicone sealant around our bathtub in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment and found a bunch of black mold growing underneath it. We’ve lived here for two years and just noticed it, but I’m sure it’s been there a while. What’s the safest way to remove this myself without exposing my family to more spores?

The safest approach is to have a professional assess it first, given the children's coughing. Black mold under sealant often indicates a deeper moisture issue within the wall cavity, and DIY removal can aerosolize a high concentration of spores. For a small, surface-level patch, you can proceed cautiously.
First, ensure the bathroom is isolated. Seal the door with tape and plastic sheeting, open a window if possible, and run the exhaust fan. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Lightly mist the mold with water to suppress spores before carefully scraping it away with a putty knife. Never dry-scrub or use a power washer. Dispose of all contaminated materials in a sealed bag. After removal, the critical step is to kill residual spores and hyphae. A solution of white vinegar or a proprietary mold remover is effective; bleach only surface-bleaches and does not kill the root structure. Scrub the area thoroughly. The underlying cause is Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use, which creates condensation. Simply resealing will trap moisture again. The area must be completely dry—this can take days with a fan—before applying a high-quality, mold-resistant silicone sealant. With children experiencing respiratory symptoms, the wisest course is professional inspection. They can use moisture meters to check the wall and air testing to identify the spore species and concentration, which determines the necessary containment level for safe remediation. |
