Safely removing black mold near kids' bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop since we got back from summer vacation, and I just found a patch of black mold behind their bedroom wardrobe. We live in an older building in Jumeirah and I’m worried the humidity from the AC is making it worse. What’s the safest way to get rid of this without putting my family at risk?

Black mold exposure, especially for children, can cause persistent coughing and respiratory irritation. The high humidity in Dubai, combined with year-round AC use that creates condensation, creates ideal conditions for mold growth in older buildings.

For a patch behind a wardrobe, your first step is safety. Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach or other household cleaners, as this can aerosolize the spores and make the problem worse. Keep the children out of the room and ensure good ventilation by opening windows if possible. Isolate the area by closing the door and covering the doorway with a plastic sheet if available.

Given that this is in a child's bedroom and the mold is already suspected of causing health effects, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The mold you see is often just the tip of the iceberg; it can spread inside wall cavities or under flooring. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the full extent and identify the moisture source, which is critical—often a leaking AC condensate drain pipe or seepage from the building envelope.

Remediation for a scenario like this involves containing the area with negative air pressure to prevent spore spread, physically removing the contaminated materials (like drywall or insulation), and HEPA vacuuming all surfaces. The underlying moisture issue must be fixed, or the mold will return. After remediation, a clearance test from an independent lab should confirm the spore count inside the room is lower than outdoors. For verifiable results, look for a company that provides before-and-after data from a certified microbiology lab.
