Safely removing black mold with toddler allergies?« Back to Previous Page

My toddler has been having a persistent cough and runny nose for the last few weeks, and I just found patches of black mold behind the dresser in his bedroom in our villa in Al Barsha. I think it might be from the humidity, especially after we run the AC all day. What’s the safest way to get rid of this myself without making my son’s allergies worse?

For a small patch (under one square foot) behind furniture, you can clean it yourself safely. The priority is containing spores to prevent them from spreading into the air your toddler breathes.

First, keep your son out of the room and close the door. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water in a spray bottle—avoid bleach as it can irritate airways and doesn't prevent regrowth. Lightly mist the mouldy area to dampen it and keep spores from becoming airborne, then wipe it away with a disposable cloth. Place all used cleaning materials in a sealed bag before disposing. After cleaning, use a dehumidifier or run the AC on dry mode to reduce the room's humidity, which is crucial in Dubai's climate where indoor condensation is common.

However, visible mould is often just the surface indication. If the patch is larger than a square foot, if it returns quickly after cleaning, or if the cough persists, a professional inspection is strongly advised. Hidden mould inside AC units or wall cavities is common in villas here and requires containment and lab testing to identify the species and its potential impact on sensitive individuals like toddlers.
