Safely removing black mold with toddlers at home?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived in this villa in Al Barsha for two years and it must have been growing there since last winter's humidity. What is the safest and most effective way to get rid of it completely, especially with a toddler and a baby in the house?

Black mold behind furniture in a Dubai villa is a common issue due to the high humidity and condensation that builds up on cold exterior walls, especially during the winter months. With toddlers and a baby, safety is the absolute priority.

For a small patch (less than one square meter), you can clean it yourself with caution. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Isolate the area from the rest of the house and keep children away. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the colour and does not address the root moisture problem. However, given its location behind a wardrobe, the extent is likely larger than it appears and the mold may have penetrated the wall itself.

For a suspected significant infestation, especially with health symptoms present, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They can assess the true extent and identify the moisture source—often a leaking pipe, rising damp, or condensation from thermal bridging. Remediation for occupied homes involves strict containment protocols, HEPA air scrubbing to capture spores, and safe removal of contaminated porous materials like drywall.

The only way to remove it "completely" is to fix the water source and properly remediate the affected materials. After remediation, a post-test verification by an independent lab is the best way to confirm the space has been returned to a normal fungal ecology. Look for a provider whose process is based on IICRC standards and who provides this verifiable data.
