Safely removing toddler's bedroom mold myself?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Al Barsha for two years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of my toddler's bedroom closet, behind some boxes. It must have been there a while, and I'm really worried because my son has been having a runny nose and a cough that won't go away for the past month. What's the safest and most effective way to get rid of this mold myself without risking my family's health?

First, address the moisture source. In Dubai's climate, this is likely either condensation from an AC vent/duct or humidity from an unsealed exterior wall. Move the boxes away from the wall and check if the area feels damp or if there's a nearby AC supply vent causing a cold spot.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Do not dry brush it, as this releases spores. Instead, lightly mist the area with a 50/50 solution of white vinegar and water to suppress spores, then scrub with a disposable cloth. Follow with a wipe-down using a diluted bleach solution (one part bleach to four parts water) to disinfect the area. Ensure the room is extremely well-ventilated during and after this process, and keep your toddler out until it is completely dry.

Given your son's persistent respiratory symptoms and the fact the mold was hidden, a DIY cleanup may not address the root cause or the potential for wider spore distribution. The mold you see is often just the fruiting body; the hyphae can penetrate porous materials like drywall. The only way to confirm the space is truly safe is through post-remediation verification testing, which a certified mold inspector can perform. This is particularly advised for children's rooms where health sensitivities exist.
