Safest DIY black mold removal for child's cough?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of my kids' bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It must have been there a while, and I'm really worried because my youngest has had a persistent cough that won't go away. What's the safest and most effective way to get rid of this ourselves without exposing the family?

First, address the moisture source. In Dubai's climate, this is likely condensation from an AC unit's cold air meeting warm wall surfaces or a small, unnoticed leak. Move boxes away from that wall permanently to improve air circulation and prevent recurrence.

For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can manage it yourself safely. Wear an N95 mask, nitrile gloves, and safety glasses. Isolate the area by closing the closet and covering the doorway with plastic sheeting to contain spores. Never use bleach, as it can release harmful fumes and only lightens the mold without killing it. Instead, use a dedicated EPA-approved mold cleaner or a solution of white vinegar and water. Scrub the area thoroughly, let it dry completely, then wipe again with clean water.

Dispose of any porous materials like cardboard boxes or fabrics that were in direct contact with the mold. After cleaning, run a dehumidifier in the room and ensure the AC is set to a temperature that minimizes condensation on walls.

Given your child's persistent cough, which is a common reaction to mold exposure, DIY cleaning is only a surface solution. The mold you see is often just the surface growth; the actual root structure can penetrate deeper. For a child's bedroom, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the wall cavity and air quality, ensuring the spores aren't circulating in the AC system and affecting the entire room. This is the only way to confirm the mold is fully addressed and not a health risk.
