Safest DIY black mold removal with kids and pets?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from black mold growing along the bottom of the wall in their bedroom, behind the dresser. We’ve lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed it when we rearranged the furniture last week. It must have been there for a while, thriving in the humidity. What is the safest and most effective way to remove this mold ourselves, considering I have young children and pets in the house?

For a small patch of black mold (under 1 square meter), DIY removal can be safe if done meticulously. The priority is isolating the area and preventing spore dispersal. Start by moving children and pets to a different part of the house and keep them away until the area is completely dry and ventilated.

Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety goggles. Seal the room by closing the door and covering the air conditioning vent with plastic sheeting and tape to prevent spores from circulating through the ducts. Place a box fan in an open window to blow air out, creating negative pressure.

For porous surfaces like drywall, the affected material often needs to be cut out and discarded, as mold roots deeply penetrate. For non-porous surfaces, scrub with a dedicated microfiber cloth and a solution of detergent and warm water. Avoid bleach; it only lightens the colour and doesn't kill the root structure. After cleaning, wipe the area with a diluted vinegar solution.

Dispose of all cleaning cloths and any removed material in sealed plastic bags. Thoroughly vacuum the immediate area with a HEPA-filter vacuum cleaner. The room must be kept dry with a dehumidifier and well-ventilated for at least 24-48 hours.

However, given that this was hidden behind furniture and you have respiratory symptoms in the home, a professional inspection is strongly advised. The visible patch is often just the surface of a larger problem within the wall cavity, especially in Jumeirah villas with high humidity and constant AC use causing condensation. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the extent and identify the underlying moisture source, which is critical to prevent rapid regrowth.
