Safest DIY black mold removal with kids present?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop since we got back from our summer holiday, and I’ve just found patches of black mold behind their bedroom wardrobe. We live in an older building in Jumeirah 1 and I’m worried the humidity from the AC is making it worse. What’s the safest way to get rid of this myself without exposing my family to more spores?

For a small patch (under one square foot) behind the wardrobe, you can manage this safely. The combination of high humidity and constant AC use in older Jumeirah buildings creates perfect conditions for this exact problem; the AC's cold air meeting the warm wall causes condensation the wardrobe traps.
First, isolate the area. Keep the kids and any pets out of the room entirely during the process and for several hours after. Open a window if possible to create cross-ventilation. You will need an N95 mask, goggles, and rubber gloves. Do not skip this. Mix a solution of 4 parts water to 1 part white vinegar in a spray bottle—this is often more effective and far less harsh than bleach for common black mould. Lightly mist the patch to dampen it and prevent spores from becoming airborne during cleaning. Scrub the area with a stiff-bristled brush, then wipe clean with disposable cloths. Place all used cleaning materials in a sealed bag for disposal. Crucially, address the moisture source. After cleaning, wipe down the wall and the back of the wardrobe with a dry cloth. Move the wardrobe slightly away from the wall to allow air circulation, which will help prevent rapid regrowth. Given the location was hidden and the children's symptoms, this is likely part of a larger issue. Mould behind furniture often indicates higher humidity levels within the wall itself. A professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging can identify the full extent and the root cause, which is essential for your family's health. DIY cleaning addresses the visible symptom but not the underlying condition. |
